Travelling with your Wegovy can feel a little daunting. You are safe to travel with your medication, but there are some considerations, and some planning is required.

Here’s our guide to travelling with Wegovy medication stress-free! There are some differences between travelling with oral and injectable medication which we will deep dive into.

Unlike injectable medication, oral Wegovy does not have the same storage conditions described below. However, it is important to remember that the medication must be kept in the original packaging until immediately before dosing. The packaging helps protect the medication. 

It is also important to check local embassy guidelines of the country you are travelling to. Some countries have a strict list of medications you cannot bring into the area.  

‍Storage of injectable Wegovy: 

One of the first things to consider is how to store your Wegovy while travelling. Before first use, Wegovy must be stored in a fridge between 2°C to 8°C and away from the cooling element. 

After initial use, a pen must be used within six weeks. It can be stored below 30°C, but preferably in a fridge. Make sure you keep the pen cap on to protect it from the light.  

We recommend using a ‘medication cool pouch’, widely available from pharmacies and online, whilst carrying your medication to your destination. It is also important to make sure it is protected from direct sunlight. 

‍Flying with injectable Wegovy: 

Keep your Wegovy pen in your hand luggage. Never pack your Wegovy in checked luggage - the temperature and pressure in the hold will damage the medication.

Fluid restrictions do not apply to medications. Therefore, you can bring as many pens as you need for your stay in your hand luggage. If you’re expected to come to the end of a pen during your trip, it can be a good idea to take an extra in case of a lost dose from the pen or your trip is unexpectedly extended.

It is recommended that you keep your Wegovy pen in the original container and packaging, with a readable label,  so airport security can quickly identify it.  Ask your clinician for a travel letter and copy of your prescription that you can show to airport security if asked for.

Timing considerations with oral and injectable medication: 

Travelling across different time zones can affect your dosing schedule. It's essential to maintain consistency with your weekly injections or daily tablets, so you might need to adjust the timing of your doses accordingly. Please discuss this with your clinician if you need further guidance. 

Healthcare: 

Consider the accessibility of medical facilities at your destination in case you encounter any issues while travelling. Knowing where to find healthcare services can provide peace of mind in case of emergencies. Ensure you have health insurance covering you for any overseas travel, and you have disclosed the use of your Wegovy medication to your provider. 

Hydration and Nutrition: 

Travelling can change your eating and drinking habits. So, remember to stay hydrated and eat a balanced diet.
