A guide to taking Wegovy tablets: four steps you need to know

What We’ll Cover:

  • The four rules to remember when taking Wegovy tablets
  • Tips for building a routine
  • Common questions

Wegovy tablets need to be taken in a specific way to help your body absorb the medication properly. Food, drinks and other medications taken too soon can reduce how much of the medication your body absorbs.

Following these instructions can help you get the most benefit from your treatment. It may feel unusual at first, but many people find it quickly becomes part of their morning routine.

The four rules when taking Wegovy tablets

  1. Take your tablet when you wake up
Take your tablet first thing in the morning on an empty stomach, after fasting overnight for 8-hours.
  1. Use a small amount of plain water
Swallow the tablet with no more than 120ml of plain water (around half a glass).
Avoid tea, coffee, juice, squash or other drinks at this time.
  1. Swallow the tablet whole
Do not crush, split, chew or dissolve the tablet.
  1. Wait at least 30 minutes before food, drinks, or other medications

After taking your tablet, wait at least 30 minutes before:
  • Eating food
  • Drinking anything other than water
  • Taking any other medications
  • This helps your body absorb the medication properly.

Example of a morning routine when taking oral Wegovy

  1. Wake up
  2. Take your Wegovy tablet with a small amount of water
  3. Get dressed, shower or start your morning routine
  4. Wait at least 30 minutes
  5. Have breakfast and any other medications

Many people find it helpful to link taking their medication to an existing morning habit. This is called habit stacking.

Common questions

What if I miss a dose?

  • If you forget to take your tablet, skip the missed dose and take your next dose at the usual time the following day. Do not take two tablets together to make up for a missed dose. If you are unsure what to do, contact your clinician or pharmacist for advice.

Can I take it with tea or coffee?

  • No. Use no more than 120ml of plain water only.

Can I take it with breakfast?

  • No. Take it on an empty stomach and wait at least 30 minutes before eating.

Can I take other medications at the same time?

  • No. Wait at least 30 minutes before taking other medications unless your clinician has advised otherwise.

Can I take Wegovy tablets at night?

  • No. Wegovy tablets should be taken first thing in the morning on an empty stomach.

Can I use a dosette box?

  • No. Keep pills in the original blister pack until immediately before dosing. Do not transfer to pill organisers. The tablets can break down easily. The packaging helps protect the medication.

Summary

Taking Wegovy tablets correctly can help your body absorb the medication as intended.

Remember the four rules:

  1. Take it when you wake up
  2. Use a small amount of plain water
  3. Swallow it whole
  4. Wait at least 30 minutes before food, drinks or other medications

Clinician’s Tip

Keep your tablet and a small glass of water by your bedside. Many people find it easier to take their tablet as soon as they wake up, then use the 30-minute waiting period to shower, get dressed or prepare for the day.
